Immediate treatment for Newborn to Age 1:
1. Check for consciousness, then call for medical help.
2. Roll the infant onto his back as a unit and place on a firm surface.
3. Open the airway by gently tilting the head back, and look, listen and
feel for breathing for 5 seconds.
In an emergency where the infant is not breathing:
1. Seal your lips around the nose & mouth, then give 2 slow breaths
for 1 1/2 seconds each.
2. Check the pulse in the upper arm for 5-10 seconds, and listen close
to the chest for a heartbeat.
If no pulse:
1. Keep the head tilted with one hand, and place 2 fingers just below
the baby's breastbone.
2. Depress the 2 fingers about 1/2-1 inch by pushing straight down,
giving 5 compressions in about 3 seconds.
3. Seal your lips around nose and mouth again, and give 1 breath. CHECK
pulse.
4. Repeat cycles of 1 breath and 5 compressions for until the infant
revives or help arrives.
Immediate treatment for age 1 to 8:
1. Check for consciousness.
2. Send someone to call for emergency medical services.
3. In an emergency where the victim is not breathing or his heart is not
beating, there are three basic steps to follow: (see animations)
4. Open the airway: roll the person on to his back, then tilt the
head back.
5. Restore breathing: pinch the nose closed and blow 2 slow breaths
into his mouth so the chest rises. Check pulse.
6. Restore blood circulation: perform chest compression technique,
giving 5 compressions in about 4 seconds.
7. Repeat cycles of 1 breath and 5 compressions for 10 cycles.
8. Continue CPR until the victim begins breathing and the heart begins
beating, or until professional help arrives.
Immediate treatment for age 8 through adult:
1. Check for consciousness.
2. Send someone to call for emergency medical services.
3. In an emergency where the victim is not breathing or his heart is not
beating, there are three basic steps to follow: (see animations)
4. Open the airway: roll the person on to his back, then tilt the
head back.
5. Restore breathing: pinch the nose closed and blow 2 full breaths
into his mouth so the chest rises. Check pulse.
6. Restore blood circulation: perform chest compression technique,
giving 15 compressions in 10 seconds.
7. Repeat cycles of 2 breaths and 15 compressions for 4 cycles.
8. Continue CPR until the victim begins breathing and the heart begins
beating, or until professional help arrives.
